PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. - The owners of a 4-year-old dachshund got an early Christmas gift after a South Florida veterinarian performed surgery on the dog for free.
Lola had a slipped disc that prevented her from walking, so owners Sumey and David Hageman gave her to an animal rescue group because they couldn't afford the $6,000 surgery.
But veterinarian Dr. Michael Wong, owner of Southeast Veterinary Neurology in Kendall, had a different plan.
"He really felt that, you know, Lola should be with her family for Christmas," Southeast Veterinary Neurology practice manager Rachel Teichberg told Local10.com.
Teichberg said Wong performed the surgery earlier this month.
Lola was reunited with her Pembroke Pines family on Christmas Eve.
"They were beside themselves," Teichberg said.
Wong often works with rescue groups and was doing Lola's surgery anyway. He decided to give them a special gift.
Sumey Hageman said it's the best gift she could have received.
