Virginian Sen. Creigh Deeds, D-Bath, was in critical condition Tuesday after he was stabbed, The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

The incident reportedly happened at his home in the small community of Allegani Mountain in Bath County. His son died of a gunshot wound, the Dispatch reported.

"Thinking and praying for Creigh Deeds and his entire family. He's a great man and public servant," Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz tweeted.

During a campaign earlier this year, there were reports that Deeds was criticized for his support of Virginia's pro-gun laws.
