Intoxicated man arrested after calling 911 to protest eviction, deputies say

Thomas Bieger arrested on charge of misuse of 911 system

GRASSY KEY, Fla. – An intoxicated man was arrested Wednesday night for calling 911 after being repeatedly warned by deputies not to do so, Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Thomas Bieger, 54, of Hollywood, had been hired by a Grassy Key man to help repair the resident's home on Goodley Street.

The resident was letting Bieger stay overnight in an extra bedroom, but Bieger overstayed his welcome and refused to leave, Herrin said.

When Deputy Daniel Hill told Bieger to gather his things and leave, Bieger refused, saying he would have to be evicted and demanding to see a supervisor, Herrin said.

Sgt. Nick Whiteman soon arrived and again told Bieger he would have to leave, but Bieger continued to argue and demanded to see a lieutenant, Herrin said.

After Whiteman refused to call a lieutenant, Bieger said he would call 911 to demand one, Herrin said.

Bieger, who was told that he would be arrested if he called 911 for a non-emergency, eventually carried his belongings across the street and stood outside the home, struggling to stay on his feet, Herrin said.

While deputies were keeping watch, they said they saw Bieger talking on his cellphone. Whiteman checked with dispatchers, who said an intoxicated man was calling them from a house on Goodley Street, Herrin said.

Biegler was arrested and taken to jail. He faces a charge of misuse of the 911 system.
