Woman, 80, accused of shoplifting

Ruth Sharon charged with grand theft

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - An 80-year-old woman is accused of shoplifting at a Target in Davie.

Ruth Sharon appeared in bond court on Tuesday.

"It was not my intention to do grand theft," said Sharon.

"Your age is a thing that we can all respect you for reaching a nice old age, ma'am, but that's not always going to be the ticket out of everything," said Broward County Judge John Hurley.

Sharon was arrested Sunday at a Target on University Drive in Davie. Workers saw her placing $316 worth of items into a bag, according to police. They stopped her as she tried to walk out the front door.

Police said Sharon didn't have any cash or credit cards on her when she was arrested.

"There were extenuating circumstance related to my health," said Sharon. "I was sick at the time and this was substantiated by a doctor."

Sharon was charged with one count of grand theft. She was released from jail Tuesday afternoon.

Prosecutors said this wasn't Sharon's first offense. She was arrested for grand theft in 2003 but the charges were dropped.

Hurley declined to dismiss the case.

"I understand you're up in years, that doesn't mean there's a free pass on on this, alright? So, I'm going to let you go on your own recognizance but don't go back to Target, thank you," said Hurley.
