Woman describes armed kidnapping of infant daughter

Melinda Kemp says it broke her to find out cousin orchestrated kidnapping

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Local 10 News spoke exclusively Wednesday to the mother of a 2-month-old girl who was kidnapped at gunpoint near Fort Lauderdale.

The baby's alleged kidnapper is no stranger -- she's the mother's cousin.

Taraji Kemp was later found safe in Orlando and reunited with her mother, but the fear and grief are still so fresh for her mother.

"I didn't know," Melinda Kemp said. "I just woke up to dark figures, shadows."

Kemp was jolted awake late Friday by intruders who wanted to take her daughter, and her 7-year-old son was there to see.

"They kidnapped my baby," Kemp can be heard crying in the 911 call. "They came and put a gun in my face and told me they were going to kill me."

Friday's nightmare became confusing and hurtful over the weekend as Kemp's cousin, Stephanie Augustin, was arrested in connection with the armed kidnapping, along with Augustin's 14-year old relative.

Augustin recently had a miscarriage, an arrest report said.

"I used to always tell her, 'I'm proud of you. You're going to school, no kids, you're beautiful. You go girl,'" Kemp said. "It broke me to find out it was her."

Augustin is in jail without bond. She will undergo mental health evaluations.

Kemp said the mental evaluation of Augustin makes sense to her.

"She said sorry and she wanted to talk to me  alone," Kemp said. "I said no. I told the detective, 'No, I just, I don't want to cry right now. I'm happy. My baby is here.'"
