FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - A 22-year-old woman who was swimming in the Intracoastal Waterway in Fort Lauderdale was bitten by a shark Sunday.

Jessica Vaughn was in the water waiting for her friends to join her on a tubing trip when she was attacked.

"It came up from behind her and bit her leg and then kind of smacked its tail and most of its body out of the water, hit her in the face actually, and took off," witness Peter Hogge told Local 10.

Friends said they heard her scream and then saw the blood.

"I'm in the water. She's bleeding everywhere," witness Kyle Branson said. "I'm not going to just leave her out there, so I tried to get her on the tube."

Friends pulled her back on the boat and took her to shore. She was then taken to Broward Health Medical Center.

Vaughn suffered a bite to the leg. She underwent surgery and is expected to be OK.

Witness on the boat said it was a bull shark that bit her.

"He was there to eat," Hogge said. "He would have taken a chunk with him."
