BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. - A woman was shot in the leg Monday while watching Fourth of July fireworks, authorities said.
According to police, Glenda Jenkins, 56, was sitting on her front porch eating ice cream and watching the fireworks being set off by her neighbor when she saw blood on her left leg.
After taking a closer look, she soon realized that she had been shot.
Jenkins told police that she heard multiple gunshots coming from north and south of her home about 9:30 p.m. and told her husband that she wanted to go inside.
That's when she realized she had already been shot.
Police said Jenkins' wound was not life-threatening and they believe that she was shot by someone who was firing a gun into the air in celebration of Independence Day.
"This is exactly why police urge the public not to fire weapons into the air during July Fourth celebrations," Boynton Beach police spokeswoman Stephanie Slater said. "It's the law of gravity -- what goes up must come down -- and bullets can easily travel over a mile if fired directly in the air."
