QUIBDO, Colombia — There were more than 43,175 people homeless in western Colombia’s Chocó region after the 7.4-magnitude earthquake on Monday, according to the area’s governor.

The earthquake’s epicenter was in San José del Palmar, a municipality in a rainforest in Chocó, an impoverished region that is home to the highest population of Black Colombians.

Nubia Córdoba, the governor of Chocó, was in Quibdó to meet with Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella on Monday. Her office also reported that there were at least 14 people dead, 139 injured, 468 homes destroyed, about 3,200 homes damaged, and 38 schools affected.

Córdoba’s administration designated a fund for public donations to help the victims and asked for donations of bottled water, nonperishable food, hygiene kits, pet food, and construction materials.
