Spring Gardens residents help abandoned dog

Joey taken to Alton Road Animal Hospital

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – An abandoned dog has found a temporary home at the Alton Road Animal Hospital in Miami Beach.

Veterinarians said the dog, Joey, was abandoned five days ago on a street corner in Miami's Spring Garden neighborhood.

"We don't know who left him," Julian Rovito, who lives in the area, said.

"I think that was probably the cruelest thing, especially on the coldest day," resident Erika Franco said.

According to neighbors, the dog was found in the morning, shivering and scared.

It didn't take long for the neighborhood blog to fill with posts about its new canine neighbor.

"Everybody in this neighborhood are dog lovers, and little by little, I started to see a box , a tarp, food (and) water," Franco said.

"He was very toasty and warm in his hut until it got wet, of course," Meredith Vey said.

The neighbors contacted the Animal Recovery Mission, whose rescuers took Joey to the animal hospital.

"This is one of the reasons why I love Spring Gardens," Vey said. "It's one of these little communities. We all stick together. That includes the humans and the animals."

A GoFundMe page was also set up for Joey, asking for $500 to help with his medical bills. So far, people have donated more than triple that amount.

"We just really want to get him into a loving home and an opportunity to be cared for," Rovito said.

"He's going to make someone very happy and bring a lot of love into a new house," Vey said.

Anyone interested in adopting Joey is asked to call the Alton Road Animal Hospital at 305-674-7387.
