Horse falls into canal after being frightened by chickens; firefighters rescued

Horse back with owner, doing OK

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – A horse fell into a canal Sunday afternoon after being startled by some chickens, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said.

The horse's owner called firefighters after the large animal ran away from the birds near Southwest 167 Avenue and Southwest 195 Street, firefighters said.

When firefighters arrived the horse was uneasy and difficult, according to authorities. However, the department's venom unit, which specializes in animal rescues, was able calm it down.

After the horse had relaxed the  technical rescue team, which specializes in difficult  large animal rescues, was able to complete the rescue.

The horse was returned to its owner after being checked out by a veterinarian.
