Boat captain rescues dog found swimming in New River

Owner says dog swan for about 2 miles

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A boat captain working on the New River this week found something he never expected floating alongside his boat.

Ryan Little works for a marine towing and salvage company. He said he was towing a yacht up the river Monday when he saw a dog struggling to stay above water.

The dog, named Gypsy, had jumped off of the sea wall in his owner's yard and ended up swimming two miles down the river before Little found her.

"It was severely exhausted from swimming. I don't know how far it was swimming," Little said. "It looked like there were a couple little cuts on its pads, looked like it tried getting up some walls and stuff. Yeah, it was happy to get on the boat. Seems like she wanted to chase some more ducks though."

Little pulled Gypsy onto the boat and posted a picture of her on Facebook and the website Nextdoor in hopes of finding her owner.

The owner, John Calia, said he saw the post and was reunited with his dog a few hours later.

He said he is happy to have her home and said she is doing fine.
