Miniature horses roam free near Florida's Turnpike

5 miniature horses escape through hole in fence

MIRAMAR, Fla. – Some miniature horses were roaming free Wednesday morning along the side of Florida's Turnpike in Miramar.

Sky 10 was above the turnpike near Red Road as five miniature horses were roaming in the grass.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers were standing nearby, apparently in an effort to keep them from roaming onto the turnpike.

Sky 10 followed the horses as they galloped through nearby yards and along a paved road running parallel to a canal.

The horses' owner and a neighbor tried to help round up the escaped equestrians, but they slipped away again through a gap in a fence. It was the same way that the horses orchestrated their initial escape.

"There was a hole in the fence over here in this empty property next door and they ended up on the highway," neighbor Benny Puentes said.

At one point, one of the horses celebrated freedom by rolling around in a pile of leaves.

The horses eventually made their way back home.

"Everybody's home. Everybody's safe," Puentes said. "No accidents on the highway. Everything's great."
