Wei-Yen Chen signs $80 million, 5-year deal with Marlins

Left-handed pitcher expected to be No. 2 behind ace Jose Fernandez

MIAMI – Left-handed pitcher Wei-Yin Chen has finalized an $80 million, five-year contract with the Miami Marlins.

The Marlins announced the agreement Tuesday.

Chen, who is expected to be the No. 2 starter behind ace Jose Fernandez, can opt out after 2017 and has an option for 2021.

In four seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, Chen went 46-32 with a 3.72 ERA. Last year he made 31 starts and went 11-8 with a 3.34 ERA, which ranked seventh in the American League.

Chen is the first Taiwanese player in Marlins history. He previously played for the Chunichi Dragons in Japan before coming to Baltimore.

The signing was the second this week for the Marlins, who announced their $50 million, five-year deal with National League batting champion Dee Gordon on Monday.
