ABC announces tripleheader to begin 2016 college football season

Notre Dame visits Texas in rare Sunday night game

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – ABC will kick off the 2016 college football season on Labor Day weekend with a tripleheader and a rare Sunday night game, all featuring powerhouse teams.

ESPN and ABC announced their opening slate of college football games Tuesday, highlighted by Notre Dame at Texas in prime time on Sept. 4.

A trio of neutral-site games will begin the ABC college football season Sept. 3, starting with a noon kickoff pitting Oklahoma against Houston at NRG Stadium. The Sooners earned a berth in the College Football Playoff last season, losing to Clemson in the Orange Bowl. Houston defeated Florida State in the Peach Bowl last year to cap off a 13-win season for the Cougars.

Louisiana State then travels to Wisconsin at 3:30 p.m. for the first college football game at Lambeau Field in Green Bay since 1983.

Last but not least, Southern California meets Alabama at 8 p.m. The Trojans face the defending national champions at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, where the Crimson Tide are 2-0 in season-opening games.

The next day, Texas hosts Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. in what is believed to be the network's first-ever Sunday regular-season prime-time game. The Fighting Irish beat the Longhorns 38-7 last year at Notre Dame Stadium.
