Miami Beach commission unanimously votes to rename street after Muhammad Ali

Life-sized sculpture also coming to city

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Miami Beach commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday to rename a street after Muhammad Ali.

Ali trained in the city's famed Fifth Street Gym while preparing for his legendary fight against Sonny Liston. He also announced that he had changed his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali while in the city.

"To honor his iconic bout with Sonny Liston at the Miami Beach Convention Center, I am proposing renaming Convention Center Drive to Muhammad Ali Drive," Mayor Phillip Levine said Tuesday.

Some Miami Beach residents wanted a more prominent street named after the boxer.

"I'd rather see them rename Washington Avenue (to) Muhammad Ali Drive," a resident said.

City officials said a life-sized sculpture of the boxing legend will also be placed in the city. While a location has not been decided, officials said it will likely be placed in or outside the convention center.
