Hurricanes head coach Mark Richt breaks down search for new starting quarterback

Coach talk from ACC Media day

Hurricanes head coach Mark Richt speaks with the media Friday during ACC Media day in Charlotte.

CHARLOTTE – Hurricanes head coach Mark Richt is still looking for a new starting quarterback for the University of Miami and he talked about his approach to finding that arm during the second day of ACC Media days in Charlotte, N.C. on Friday.

Richt said the QB competition is not just about incoming freshman N'Kosi Perry, but rather it's about finding a true field general. "The big thing for me is to.. I just need a guy who's gonna have a great respect for the football," said Richt. "They all have arm talent, they all can move. But what are you going to do when the protection breaks down? Are you going to throw it up for grabs?"

He's known as a QB guru and Richt said he would be comfortable giving either redshirt junior Malik Rosier or redshirt sophomore Evan Shirreffs the job. True freshman Cade Weldon and Perry will both be in the mix.

Richt said he wants a QB who can handle the pressure of being the quarterback at U.M., however he admitted he probably won't know that until they kick-off the season at home September second against Bethune-Cookman.
