FIU moves football game to Friday night in Birmingham, Alabama

Panthers to play home game at Legion Field

MIAMI – Florida International University will play its home opener away from home because of Hurricane Irma.

The school announced Wednesday that FIU's football game against Alcorn State will be played Friday at 7 p.m. in Birmingham, Alabama.

FIU was originally scheduled to play its home opener Saturday night.

"We have decided to relocate a number of our teams to Birmingham, Alabama," FIU athletic director Pete Garcia said in a statement.

The game will be played at Legion Field, home to the University of Alabama at Birmingham football team.

"I want to thank UAB director of athletics Mark Ingram, the University of Alabama (at) Birmingham and the Birmingham community for their tremendous help and assistance," Garcia said. "The UAB family has gone above-and-beyond to make us feel welcome."

The Panthers (0-1) lost to Central Florida 61-17 last week.
