In a very competitive match, the Haitian women’s team defeated Chile 2 to 1 in a historic playoff match.

Haitians here in South Florida tell Local 10 News this is truly a day to celebrate, because Haiti is in the news for something positive after months of unrest and sad news.

“We beat the hell out of them, 2 to 1, I’m very happy for the Haitian community, everybody’s happy,” Haitian-American Delva Backer said. “You can’t underestimate any women, whether it’s a Haitian woman or American woman.”

The team will compete at the Women’s World Cup this summer.
