Airport shooting 'hit home' for Clemson cornerback from South Florida

Adrian Baker says family, friends work at Fort Lauderdale airport

TAMPA, Fla. – A Clemson cornerback from South Florida was among those concerned travelers who learned that a gunman had opened fire in the baggage claim area at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, killing five people and wounding six others.

Adrian Baker was flying from South Carolina to Florida when he heard about the mass shooting.

"That incident really hit home for me because, when I go home, I fly into Fort Lauerdale-Hollywood International, and also I have family and friends (who) work there," the redshirt junior told Local10.com.

Baker, who grew up in Hallandale Beach and played football at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory, was en route to Tampa, where his third-ranked Tigers (13-1) will play top-ranked Alabama (14-0) for the national championship Monday night at Raymond James Stadium.

The 22-year-old immediately called and sent text messages to his friends and relatives to make sure they were OK. They were not among the victims.

Baker said he was fortunate that everyone from home coming to Tampa to support Clemson lives close enough that they could drive.

"Luckily, they didn't have to fly in," Baker said.

Baker, who hasn't played all season after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in a knee last spring, sent his condolences and prayers to the victims and their families.
