Antonio Callaway, 6 other Gators suspended for Michigan game

Florida's leading receiver from Miami won't play in season opener

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Seven Florida football players, including leading receiver Antonio Callaway, have been suspended for the team's opener against Michigan.

Florida head coach Jim McElwain made the announcement Sunday in a statement.

"We have a small group of players that have made some choices that are extremely disappointing," McElwain said. "Action has been taken. They have missed some practice and will miss the Michigan game. We will use this as a learning opportunity and we will have some players step up as we move forward."

A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press the players were suspended for misusing school-issued funds. The person spoke to the AP on the condition of anonymity Sunday because Florida did not release details of the suspensions.

The other Gators suspended are junior defensive end Keivonnis Davis, freshman offensive lineman Kadeem Telfort, redshirt freshman defensive lineman Jordan Smith, sophomore defensive lineman Richerd Desir-Jones, freshman linebacker Ventrell Miller and freshman linebacker James Houston.

Callaway, a junior from Miami, led the Gators last season with 721 yards. He has 1,399 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in his Florida career.

The Gators will open their season Sept. 2 against the Wolverines at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The game will air at 3:30 p.m. on Local 10.
