'Canes fans paint 'Catholics vs. Confidence' mural before Notre Dame game

Mural on display in Wynwood

MIAMI – While some fans get creative with body paint for the big football game, a pair of Miami Hurricanes diehards painted a wall mural to support their team.

Two graffiti artists took their skills to a wall in Wynwood on Friday in hopes of psyching up the Canes before Saturday's matchup against Notre Dame.

"I just want them to know that the community's behind them and we're excited," said Surge, one of the artists.

Instead of recycling the old "Catholics vs. Convicts" theme that dominated the rivalry in the 1980s and 1990s, the artists drew inspiration for the mural from the current team's "turnover chain."

With the chain becoming the symbol of a tough-as-nails defense, "Catholics vs. Confidence" is the phrase that pays these days.

Before pulling out the paint and brushes, Surge asked the owner of 004 Connec studio in Wynwood for permission to paint the wall. As the owner is a Hurricanes fan, the request was approved.

The mural can be seen in the 2400 block of North Miami Avenue in Wynwood. How long it remains up most likely depends on whether Miami defeats the Fighting Irish.

Oh, by the way, you can watch the game on Local 10 starting at 8 p.m.
