Gerald Willis will not play for Hurricanes in 2017, taking leave of absence

Defensive lineman transferred to Miami from Florida

CORAL GABLES, Fla. ā€“ University of Miami defensive lineman Gerald Willis will not play this upcoming season.

The school announced Thursday that Willis will be taking a leave of absence from the football program.

"Gerald remains part of the Miami family and may take part in designated team activities," Hurricanes head coach Mark Richt said.

Willis transferred to Miami from the University of Florida.

He played nine games for Miami last season and posted 19 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
