The Miami Northwestern Senior High School graduate was recruited by former head coach Al Golden and enrolled in January 2014, but he played sparingly during his tenure with the Hurricanes.

Mayes recorded just three tackles last season.

The school did not elaborate on Mayes' departure.

Mayes is the third Miami player to leave the program since June, along with cornerback Terrance Henley and tight end Jovani Haskins. Defensive lineman Gerald Willis took a leave of absence from the team and won't play in 2017.
