TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State canceled its home football game Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe because of impending Hurricane Irma.

The cancellation Thursday night came after Florida Gov. Rick Scott ordered all state colleges and universities closed through Monday to support shelter and emergency relief efforts.

The teams do not have open dates on the same week, preventing them from rescheduling the game.

"All relocation and rescheduling possibilities were exhausted," FSU athletic director Stan Wilcox said in a statement. "Under these circumstances and on such short notice, the two teams will not be able to reschedule this year as there is no common open date."

Florida State initially moved the start time for the game in Tallahassee from 7:30 p.m. to noon.

"In the interest of safety of individuals throughout the state, and to allow our student-athletes, staff and fans to prepare for a storm of significant magnitude, we have decided to cancel all athletics events, including the ULM football game on Saturday," FSU President John Thrasher said in a statement. "The cancellations will help reduce the consumption of fuel and congestion on major travel arteries."

The Seminoles are scheduled to play No. 16 Miami in Tallahassee on Sept. 16.
