SUNRISE, Fla. — A felony charge has been dropped against Miami Hurricanes running back Jordan Lyle following his arrest in connection with a high-speed driving incident in Sunrise, Local 10 learned Thursday.
Lyle, 20, had been accused of fleeing from police after an officer said he initially clocked him driving 92 mph in a 65-mph zone on the Sawgrass Expressway on July 10.
Authorities accused Lyle of accelerating to speeds of approximately 130 mph or greater while trying to get away from police.
Lyle was initially arrested on charges of fleeing and eluding at a high speed and reckless driving.
The felony charge has now been dropped, and Lyle is facing a misdemeanor reckless driving charge.
According to an arrest warrant previously obtained by Local 10 News, the incident happened July 10 on the northbound Sawgrass Expressway, just north of Sunrise Boulevard.
An officer conducting traffic enforcement shortly after 7 p.m. said he saw a gray BMW X5 M-Series rapidly approaching from behind and clocked it traveling 92 mph in a posted 65-mph zone.
The officer activated his emergency lights and siren, but Lyle allegedly failed to stop and accelerated.
According to the warrant, the BMW reached speeds of approximately 130 mph or greater while traveling through heavy Friday evening traffic.
Police accused Lyle of following other vehicles at extremely short distances, making rapid and unsafe lane changes and weaving through occupied lanes.
As the BMW approached West Oakland Park Boulevard, Lyle allegedly drove onto the outside shoulder to pass other vehicles before swerving back into traffic.
The officer eventually stopped trying to catch the BMW because of its speed, traffic conditions and the danger posed to other drivers, according to the warrant.
Police said the officer continued watching the vehicle from a safe distance before seeing it exit the Sawgrass Expressway onto eastbound West Commercial Boulevard.
Investigators later used license plate reader information and surveillance video from near Lyle’s Sunrise home as part of their investigation.
Lyle was arrested Aug. 13 and released the same day after posting a $55,000 bond, according to information previously provided by the Broward State Attorney’s Office.
Following his arrest, a University of Miami spokesperson told Local 10 News in an email, “We are aware of an incident involving student-athlete Jordan Lyle. As due legal process runs its course, we will have no further comment at this time.”
Lyle, a Fort Lauderdale native, started at running back in Miami’s 2025 season opener against Notre Dame before suffering a leg injury that sidelined him for most of the season.
He played in six games, carrying the ball 35 times for 108 yards and scoring one touchdown against Stanford.
