Stanton appears on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!,' says he hasn't met with Jeter

Fate of Marlins slugger's future with team remains in question

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. ā€“ Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton appeared Tuesday on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

The outfielder, who is from California, is spending part of his offseason there.

During the interview, Stanton said that he has not yet met with the Marlins' new ownership group, including former New York Yankees star Derek Jeter.

However, the slugger and the team will meet after the World Series.

Stanton brushed off questions about the possibility that he could be traded, but he did say that he would not necessarily mind changing his position to designated hitter. That would imply a move to an American League team.

Kimmel joked with Stanton about hitting 59 home runs this season as a "failure" because he didn't reach 60.

Jeter's ownership group has not specifically revealed its plans to remake the roster, but did imply that it could be a long-term build for the Marlins.

To make that happen, Stanton's $325 million contract might have to be changed. The contract is especially burdensome to the Marlins because it is back-loaded.

Stanton was an MVP contender this year for the Marlins. However, his future with the team remains very much in doubt.
