Dolphins won't reach in NFL draft

Fins plan on sticking to draft board

DAVIE, Fla. – You can forget about the Miami Dolphins reaching to draft a player and fill a need during the NFL draft in Philadelphia April 27-29.

The Fins have the 22nd pick in the first round and they plan on sticking to their draft board when the time comes to make that selection.

The strategy was mapped out by Executive Vice President of Football Operations Mike Tannenbaum and General Manager Chris Grier during the Dolphins' annual pre-draft news conference on Wednesday.

Speaking about their draft philosophy Tannenbaum said, "we want to be opportunistic. We set the board and we rely on the board to make those decisions. Once the board is set, that's really what we rely on to make our decisions. Last year was probably the best example, where we didn't think we were going to be drafting a left tackle, but when there's a guy (Laremy Tunsil) that's so much higher-rated than anything else, those are easy decisions."

"We've done too much work over the last eight months of this to just throw that out and just go with something. For us it'll always be the board over need," said Grier.
