Gase: Time to move on from Jay Ajayi

Dolphins like running backs they have

DAVIE, Fla. – Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase addressed the Jay Ajayi trade on Wednesday.

"I think it was just time for us to move on," Gase said. "I felt like this was a good opportunity. We were kind of putting some feelers out to see where other teams were at and we've got some younger players that we feel like we're going to move forward with."

When asked if he thinks the team is better than 24 hours ago, Gase said, "I like where we're at right now."

Ajayi was sent to Philadelphia (7-1).

In exchange, the Dolphins (4-3) received a fourth-round draft pick.

Gase said the trade deadline came at an interesting time for the Dolphins.

"Thursday to Monday is a long time when you get waxed like that (40-0)," Gase said.

As for Jarvis Landry, Gase said the team told the wide receiver a long time ago he wasn't going anywhere.

The Dolphins expect Landry to be a huge part of Miami's wide receiver room long into the future.

Quarterback Jay Cutler will be back on the practice field Wednesday.Gase said that the key is to protect Cutler.

The quarterback is returning from cracked ribs that forced him to miss the Baltimore game.

Miami hosts Oakland on Sunday night.
