Jay Cutler looks 'good,' has 'fun' in Dolphins preseason debut Thursday night

Miami falls to Ravens 31-7

Dolphins quarterback Jay Cutler takes a snap during his Miami preseason debut Thursday night.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. ā€“ Jay Cutler had "fun" while making his highly-anticipated Miami Dolphins preseason debut Thursday night against the Baltimore Ravens at Hard Rock Stadium.

Making his return from a very short-lived retirement, the former Bears quarterback played only two series for the 'Fins and finished 3-of-6 for 24 passing yards with no interceptions and no touchdowns.Ā

Cutler's arm looked strong and he looked comfortable in the pocket, stepping up on one play to avoid the pass rush while completing a long pass to receiver DeVante Parker that was negated because of a holding penalty.

"He was good. We kind of got the tempo going and got comfortable," head coach Adam Gase said of Cutler. "He had a couple really nice moves in the pocket, pushing up and making a couple guys miss. He took a hit there on the screen. He's having fun."

The Dolphins featured a no-huddle offense during Cutler's two series.

"That's kind of really what we've done in the past, and he feels comfortable doing that,"GaseĀ said.

Cutler worked with Gase when Gase was the offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears. Cutler is taking over for Ryan Tannehill, who reinjured his left knee during a training camp practice earlier this month.

Running back Jay Ajayi, who returned to practice this week after being removed from the concussion protocol, got the start but was ineffective rushing the ball in limited action. However, Ajayi did catch Cutler's first pass of the game.Ā

The Dolphins defense had some bright spots with defensive backsĀ Xavien Howard and rookie Cordrea Tankersley coming up with early interceptions.Ā

Running back Senorise Perry gave the Dolphins a 7-0 lead in the second quarter when he scored on an 11-yard run. However, it was all down hill from there.

The Ravens won the game 31-7 as they scored 31 unanswered points.Ā
