Judge: Deputies fired over school massacre to get jobs back

A Florida judge ruled Thursday that two deputies who were fired for inaction during a high school mass shooting in 2018 should be reinstated with back pay. Broward Circuit Judge Keathan Frink concluded that arbitrators last year were correct in ruling that the fired Broward County deputies, Brian Miller and Joshua Stambaugh, should get their jobs back, with back pay plus other benefits, the Sun Sentinel reported. One arbitrator had ruled in September that Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony acted 13 days too late when he fired deputy Stambaugh in 2019 for his conduct during the February 2018 massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Carol Burnett granted temporary custody of teenage grandson

LOS ANGELES A court has granted Carol Burnett temporary custody of her teenage grandson as the boy's mother struggles with substance abuse. A Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday judge granted the 87-year-old Burnett and her husband, Brian Miller, custody of her 14-year-old grandson Dylan West until Jan. 8. The move came two weeks after Burnett and Miller had filed for custody, saying that her daughter, Erin Hamilton, had been struggling with addiction issues. Burnett has been married to Miller, a musician, since 2001. An email seeking comment sent to a representative for Erin Hamilton was not immediately returned.

Senate confirms special watchdog for pandemic recovery

The Senate confirmed Brian Miller, a lawyer in the White House counsels office, on a 51-40 vote Tuesday. Democrats voted against Miller after questioning his independence from President Donald Trump, who nominated him for the post. Responding to those concerns, Miller told the Senate Banking Committee during his confirmation hearing last month that independence is vital for the special inspector general for pandemic recovery. Miller has worked at the Justice Department and was inspector general for nearly a decade at the General Services Administration, which oversees thousands of federal contracts. The Pandemic Recovery Accountability Committee, a committee of inspectors general, still has no leader after Trump sidelined the original chairman, Glenn Fine, by demoting him.

Republicans seek tax cuts in next coronavirus bill; senator warns Congress may spread virus

The elimination of Sanctuary Cities, Payroll Taxes, and perhaps Capital Gains Taxes, must be put on the table, Trump wrote in a tweet. The Democratic-led House of Representatives remained in recess this week to avoid possible health risks posed by the novel coronavirus. House majority leader Steny Hoyer told reporters on Tuesday that he would not call the House back until another coronavirus relief bill is ready, possibly next week. But other Democrats were not so happy with Millers sidestepping of their questions about Trumps ousting of several inspectors general at other agencies. Miller wore a mask while testifying, as did the chairman of the panel, Republican Senator Mike Crapo.

Democrats say Trump pick for coronavirus recovery watchdog is not independent enough

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trumps pick for the new watchdog overseeing $2.3 trillion in coronavirus-related fiscal spending is not independent enough to do the job, congressional Democrats said on Saturday. REUTERS/Joshua Roberts/PoolThe White House said late on Friday Trump would nominate Brian Miller, a special assistant to the president and senior associate counsel in the Office of White House Counsel, to the role of special inspector general for pandemic recovery. The Inspector General providing oversight of the federal response of this historic relief package for workers and families must be independent from politics, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi echoed in her own statement. Senate Democrats, including Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and the top Democratic senator on the Senate Finance Committee, also criticized the move. The White House announced Trump had selected Miller for the role on the same night that he fired the inspector general of the U.S. intelligence community, Michael Atkinson.
