CHARLESTON RAMBO

Former Hurricanes sign NFL deals as undrafted free agents

While only one former Hurricane (defensive lineman Jon Ford in the seventh round) was selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, the lowest number of Miami football players chosen since 1980, numerous draft-eligible Canes have signed deals with NFL teams as undrafted free agents. King threw for 3,453 yards and ran for 634 yards in his two seasons with the Hurricanes. Sticking with the wide-receiver position, record-setters Charleston Rambo and Mike Harley Jr. signed with the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns, respectively. Defensive backs Amari Carter and Bubba Bolden reached contractual agreements with the Chicago Bears and the Seattle Seahawks, respectively. Of the former Hurricanes who were draft-eligible, only running back Cam’Ron Harris has yet to either sign with an NFL franchise or accept a rookie minicamp offer.

Defensive tackle Jonathan Ford drafted by Packers in seventh round

Senior defensive tackle Jonathan Ford provided many around Miami football a sense of relief. With the 234th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers selected Ford, 6-foot-5, 338-pound native of Fort Lauderdale on Saturday, protecting a 48-year-old streak of Miami draft picks dating back to 1975. The Packers’ seventh-round draft choice marked the first and only Hurricane drafted this year. Recording each of his three career tackles in 2019 and four solo tackles last season, Ford brings near-boundless size to a Green Bay defense. Kenny Clark, a six-year veteran for the Packers, maintains the starting role at nose tackle after logging 48 combined tackles last season.

On two separate occasions, Hurricanes graduate quarterback D’Eriq King found Oklahoma transfer wide receiver Charleston Rambo in the end zone. But Rambo’s standout performance was one of the only positive takeaways from Miami’s 38-17 loss to unranked Michigan State. But a week after a game-winning field goal lifted the Hurricanes to a narrow victory, the Michigan State Spartans delivered multiple daggers late at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday. “I have to give credit to Michigan State. Defense on third downs kept the Hurricanes in the game, though keeping the Spartans behind the line of scrimmage didn’t last long.
