Cops Call BS on Pro-Gun Uvalde Rep’s Wild Claim About Gunman

Bill Clark/GettyThe pro-gun Republican congressman representing Uvalde, who has come under fire this week for dodging questions on gun control and for previously boasting about opposing gun legislation, claimed on Friday morning that he had received “new information” that school shooter Salvador Ramos was arrested four years ago for threatening to shoot up a school. But the claim appears to be false, according to a local media report and the spouse of the trooper who investigated it at the time.“

How the Food We Eat Can Reprogram Our Genes

Thieves pick 7,000 pounds of apples off trees in Michigan orchard

Jeff T. Green/Getty(CNN) - Apple thieves snuck onto a Michigan family farm and stole more than 3 tons of fruit right off of the trees. Spicer Orchards is a popular fall destination near Flint, where families come to pick their own apples and enjoy cider, donuts and other treats. Rowe said the theft happened at a secondary orchard, where they grow apples for cider and to sell in their market. It would normally take a two- or three-person crew a couple of days to pick that many apples. "They must have had a trained crew to pick the apples in that short of a time period," she said.

Effort aims to remove sexist terms from Oxford Dictionaries

Nicolas Kamm/AFP/Getty(CNN) - Tens of thousands of people have signed a petition calling on publisher Oxford University Press (OUP) to remove "sexist" terms for women. While the OED itself does not feature these definitions, they do appear in other reference books produced by the publisher, as well as online dictionary Lexico, which takes its content from OUP dictionaries. These misogynistic definitions have become widespread because search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo license the use of Oxford Dictionaries for their definitions." Giovanardi told CNN that she herself had been subjected to online abuse -- and even rape threats -- since launching the petition. "The response has been great because we have received the support of some very big women's rights organizations," she told CNN.

US warship sails through Taiwan Strait amid tensions with Beijing

Roberto Schmidt/AFP/Getty(CNN) - The US Navy sailed a warship through the Taiwan Strait Friday, a move that comes amid heightened tensions with Beijing over trade. "USS Green Bay (LPD 20) conducted a routine Taiwan Strait transit Aug. 23 (local time) in accordance with international law," Cdr. The USS Green Bay, an amphibious transport dock ship, was scheduled to visit Hong Kong on August 17. "The ship's transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The US routinely sails through the Taiwan Strait, last doing so in July, but Chinese military forces view the strategic waterway separating China from Taiwan as a priority area and often shadow US vessels that sail through the area.

Columbine High School plans to enhance security

Instead, the Littleton, Colorado, high school, where about 1,700 students in grades 9 through 12 are currently enrolled, will implement "changes to enhance the security and privacy of the site, including the creation of an improved and defined perimeter around the building," he said. The discussion about replacing the original school was driven "by the number of 'unauthorized individuals' (some 2,401 as reported in the Colorado Sun) who came onto Columbine's grounds this past school year," stated Glass. In April, for example, the FBI reported that a high school student who was "infatuated" with the Columbine shooting had traveled from Florida to Colorado and made credible threats. The survey raised the question: "Should we rebuild Columbine High School, further back from the street on which it presently sits, and redesign the building so as to remove the attraction as the site of the 1999 murders?" "Similarly, 55% felt that a potential Columbine rebuild was 'not really important' or 'not important at all'."
