Lone Star Sadness: Horns, Aggies form Axis of Underachievers

At the top of USA Today's most recent revenue rankings for college athletic departments are Texas and Texas A&M. Texas and Texas A&M have everything needed to put out a national championship-level football program. The Aggies and Longhorns refuse to play each other but combine to form an Axis of Underachievers in the Lone Star State. In three games against Alabama under Fisher, the Aggies are 0-3 by a combined 144-75. For now, though, Texas and Texas A&M continue to prove the adage that money can't buy happiness.

Jones throws deep, No. 2 Alabama tops No. 13 Texas A&M 52-24

Briefly threatened early, Jones and the Crimson Tide (2-0) flexed their considerable big-play muscle in the passing game to put away the Aggies (1-1). “Our guys stayed the course and kept competing in the game,” Alabama coach Nick Saban said. “We won, so it's a good game,” Jones said, when asked if it was his best performance. 'I hate it for the program,' Jimbo Fisher says of Willie Taggart firing

Texas A&M Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher yells to his offense between plays during the fourth quarter against UTSA, Nov. 2, 2019, in College Station, Texas. DELRAY BEACH, Fla. - Jimbo Fisher said Wednesday he still has "a great fondness and love for Florida State," so it was disheartening to learn that his successor was fired after just 21 games. The Texas A&M head coach addressed the dismissal of Willie Taggart while speaking with reporters during a Southeastern Conference coaches teleconference. "I hate it for the program, himself, the kids and everybody involved," Fisher said. Fisher spoke fondly of his time at Florida State, where the Seminoles won three straight Atlantic Coast Conference championships and a national title during his eight years in Tallahassee.

Florida State fires head football coach after less than two seasons

TALLAHASSEE, Florida (CNN) - Florida State University fired head football coach Willie Taggart on Sunday, one day after the struggling Seminoles lost 27-10 to its in-state rival, the University of Miami. "I spoke to Coach Taggart this afternoon to let him know of our decision," said Florida State athletics director David Coburn. He was head coach there from 2010-2012 after serving as an assistant from 1999-2006. Florida State had only two full-time coaches from 1976 to 2017 -- Fisher from 2010 to 2019, and legendary coach Bobby Bowden, who served 37 years as head coach. Defensive line coach Odell Haggins, a 26-year veteran of the FSU coaching staff, will serve as the interim head coach for the rest of 2019.

Jimbo Fisher will be Aggies next head coach, sources say

HOUSTON – KPRC in Houston has learned that Texas A&M will hire Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher as soon as Florida State finishes their season this coming Saturday. Texas A&M had reportedly made plans to remove Kevin Sumlin as head coach several days before the regular season finale against LSU on Saturday night. Presumably because they wanted to be ready to pursue their new head coach as soon as possible. Fisher, who has spent the last eight seasons at Florida State, is expected to coach Saturday's rescheduled game against Louisiana-Monroe as the Seminoles attempt to become bowl eligible. Then Fisher will not coach that potential bowl game, but instead be named Aggies head coach with a contract sources say will be for a minimum of five seasons worth at least $7.5 million per season.
