JORDAN MILLER

Transfer forward Norchad Omier commits to Miami

Last year, it was Charlie Moore and Jordan Miller that transferred into the Miami men’s basketball program and invigorated the squad. This year, it is Nigel Pack, and now, Norchad Omier. Rising junior forward Omier committed to Miami Tuesday, joining the Hurricanes with three years of eligibility remaining and an already impressive resume. “Our coaching staff is extremely excited to add Norchad to the Miami basketball program,” Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga said. With Pack and now Omier, head coach Jim Larrañaga has begun to replace some of the production departing from a Miami team that just made their first Elite Eight in program history.

Men’s and women’s basketball enter offseason with strengthened UM support, returning veterans

After seasons that will go down in history, the players and coaches set their intentions for the offseason and shared their hopes for the future of Hurricanes basketball. With both Harden and Miller returning to UM’s roster in the fall, new recruits are not the only excitement on the horizon. “She knows how she can be a very special player and she knows she can do it,” Meier said. During Williams’ post-season meetings with Meier, she was fully aware of what the coaching staff wanted of her. Harden, meanwhile, is going into the offseason with no intentions of letting up in her work ethic and play style.

Miami guard Jordan Miller announces return for 2022-23 season

The 6-foot-7 guard from Middleburg, Va. shot 56% from the field and 29% from 3-point range in the 2021-2022 season. Miller had a couple of monstrous games throughout the season for head coach Jim Larrañaga and company, including scoring 25 points in ACC wins versus North Carolina State and Syracuse. In the NCAA tournament, Miller averaged nine points and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 52% from the field. “If we continue to strive for greatness, I think it will work out great for us,” Miller said. “If we all focus on what we need to improve on, we can bring back a good group of guys.”

Hurricanes headed to Elite Eight for first time in program history with win over Iowa State

For the first time ever in program history, the Miami Hurricanes are dancing on to the Elite Eight. “To reach the first Elite Eight in program history, that’s amazing,” senior guard Kameron McGusty said after the game. “Iowa State is one heck of a basketball team,” Larrañaga said. But after a timeout, Iowa State came storming back with an 8-0 run of their own to take the lead at 8-7. From there the game unraveled for Iowa State and the Canes held a double digit lead for the remainder of the game.

Miami blazes for upset win over Auburn, advances to Sweet 16 for first time since 2016

2 seed Auburn in a 79-61 upset victory in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday in Greenville, South Carolina. Auburn (28-6) never trailed by less than eight points thereafter, ending its season in shambles after beginning the season 22-1. Fourteen team assists in the second half kept the Hurricanes rolling for 46 points. A 9-for-38 shooting display in the second half and 22 allowed fastbreak points didn’t help the SEC regular season champions, either. Miami held Auburn to 17 points under its scoring average.

Jordan Miller scores last-second layup to beat Boston College in overtime

Fourth-year junior guard Jordan Miller provided late-game heroics once again, as the Miami Hurricanes beat the Boston College Eagles, 71-69, in overtime. Miami shot 30-for-56 from the field, while Boston College shot 29-for-57. Boston College quickly jumped out into the lead in at the beginning of the game. Boston College junior forward Quinten Post led his team with 12 opening-half points. There were multiple free throw attempts missed, and multiple open shots missed, including a missed shot that led to the game winning layup.

Jordan Miller’s layup completes 18-point comeback for Hurricanes

Sixth-year senior guard Charlie Moore missed a free throw that was rebounded and laid in acrobatically by fourth-year guard Jordan Miller. This basket put the Hurricanes up 73-72 with 11 seconds left and ultimately decided the game. “For him to get that one at the end was real spectacular.”Sixth-year senior guard Kameron McGusty also contributed greatly with 19 points, shooting 50% from the field. On his senior day, guard Buddy Boeheim showed out with 30 of the 72 Syracuse points. Buddy Boeheim found a shooter’s touch and further extended the Syracuse lead to 62-52 with a 3-pointer from the Syracuse logo.

Miami prepared for ‘very physical game’ against Pittsburgh

Miami men’s basketball will conclude its regular-season slate with three of its four games away from the Watsco Center, starting with a trip to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take on Pittsburgh. “I think we’ve gotten better as the season’s gone on,” Pittsburgh head coach Jeff Capel said. “Pittsburgh is a hugely physical team,” Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga said. This is going to be a very physical game.”Leading the Panthers’ imposing offensive attack is sophomore forward John Hugley, who is averaging 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game this season, leading Pittsburgh in both categories. “[Miami is] an older team, they’re an experienced team,” Capel said.

Miami’s defense leads comeback victory against Wake Forest, 76-72

Wake Forest then started to pick up some rhythm and created separation with a 20-13 lead, causing Miami to take a timeout. The Hurricanes struggled to grab boards in the first half, as Wake Forest held a six-rebound advantage over Miami heading into halftime. In ACC play, Miami ranks last in combined team rebounds, and second to last in both team offensive and defensive rebounds. In the second half, however, all of these struggles seemed to disappear. Miami’s defense forced many turnovers, as Wake Forest ended up having 17 in the entire game, 10 of which were in the second half.

Hurricanes downed by Cavaliers, drop second straight

The Virginia Cavaliers (14-9, 8-5 ACC) had other ideas, shooting a lights-out 60% from the field and 53% from 3-point range on their way to a 71-58 victory. Unfortunately for them, Virginia guard Armaan Franklin responded with a 7-0 scoring run of his own, taking a lead that the Cavaliers would never give back. Moore and McGusty had given the Hurricanes hope that their experience would pull them through a tough start to a resilient road victory. The second half was all Cavaliers as they clinically extended their lead, frustrating the Hurricanes by playing the game at an exceptionally slow pace and executing well on both ends of the floor. Defensively, junior guard Jordan Miller was the Hurricanes’ standout, tying Moore for the most steals in a game this season with seven.

Moore surpasses 1500 career points as Canes fight off late surge by Georgia Tech

With less than three minutes remaining, Georgia Tech had cut the lead to six. To solidify the win, McGusty made a clutch layup, and the Canes drained their free throws down the stretch. They had 21 makes and shot 84% from the line, which proved to be the difference in a game that Miami shot the ball poorly from the field. When Miami went on a 7-0 scoring run to start the game, Georgia Tech responded with an 8-0 run of their own. This was the first game that Miami outrebounded an opponent since their contest against Stetson on Dec. 20.

Moore’s late 3 not enough, Miami’s 9-game win streak ends against FSU

Miami got the go-ahead 3-point shot it needed with seven seconds left, but the celebration didn’t last long. Florida State hit two foul shots with 0.8 seconds left to break the Hurricanes’ nine-game win streak in a 65-64 Miami loss Tuesday night inside Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. Florida State guard Rayquan Evans then drove to the basket and drew a foul to disqualify Moore at five fouls. “I was thinking there was a lot of time left,” Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga said. “Seven seconds is an eternity when you’re only up one point.

Hurricanes rally late for sixth straight victory

In need of a quick spark, Miami blazed on a late 18-2 run in a 91-83 victory over NC State Wednesday night at the Watsco Center. Sophomore guard Isaiah Wong drilled back-to-back 3-point field goals, putting the Hurricanes ahead for the final 4:39. The former Oklahoma transfer collected 20 points, 11 rebounds and five assists to help guide the Hurricanes. After posting 11 offensive rebounds and 11 second-chance points in the first half, NC State lacked scoring offense in the final minutes. Hurricanes ready for boost in competition heading into 2022

Even with a five-game winning streak, including two wins over Power Five opponents, the Miami Hurricanes (9-3, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) always have to be prepared for what’s around the corner. While UM enters the contest on its largest winning streak of the year, NC State comes into Florida on their worst losing streak of the year, winless in their last three. “One of the biggest challenges is when you bring in five new guys with the guys that are returning,” NC State head coach Kevin Keatts said. NC State averages an astounding 12.8 offensive rebounds per game, the most of any ACC squad. Miami will tip-off against NC State at 9 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.

Hurricanes sink season-high in three pointers, beat Stetson in final non-conference game

The Miami Hurricanes delivered 14 3-pointers on Monday night, part of an 82-72 win over Stetson at the Watsco Center. The performance was the most amongst its current five-game win streak, and it all came through a newfound movement of the basketball. For reference, in each of his first two seasons at Miami, McGusty had only scored over 20 points seven times. The Oklahoma transfer is averaging 19.2 points during the win streak, and has shot at least 42% from the field in each game. Miami concludes non-conference play riding its longest win streak of the season, heading into an eight-day rest period at second place in the ACC.

Hurricanes use late surge, rally in first conference game for 80-75 win versus Clemson

Sixth-year redshirt senior Sam Waardenburg scored 18 points, the Hurricanes had four players in double-figure scoring and Miami used a 12-0 run late in the second half to propel itself to a thrilling 80-75 win in its conference opener against Clemson. The Hurricanes, who trailed for almost the entire game, took their first lead with 2:56 remaining in the game on a Jordan Miller corner 3-pointer. Miller, who finished with 13 points, played his best game as a Hurricane, sinking three shots from behind the arc after making two the entire season thus far. Clemson entered the game as the top 3-point shooting team in the ACC and 10th in the country. Clemson (5-4, 0-1 ACC) entered the halftime locker room with a six-point lead and maintained a two-possession advantage throughout the majority of the second half.

Moore’s 3-point barrage powers Miami past Florida A&M 86-59

Sixth-year senior guard Charlie Moore came to Miami determined to make an immediate impact. “He really quarterbacked the team,” Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga said. “He scored the ball, he passed the ball and really got everybody involved.”Larrañaga said he’d hoped Moore’s breakout outing was near. The Hurricanes’ 11th-year head coach sent Moore footage of his 3-point shooting proficiency at DePaul last season, a 34.6% clip, earlier in the week. The Hurricanes’ reserves, however, supported Moore, Wong and McGusty, adding 24 points over Florida A&M’s seven.

Men’s and women’s basketball look to put last season behind them, excited for new players and return of fans

When the Miami Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams each walked off the Greensboro Coliseum’s hardwood floor in March, multiple concerns factored into neither hoisting a conference championship trophy. Suffering through another disappointing campaign last season, UM men’s basketball again finished in the cellar of the ACC with a 10-17 overall record and a 4-15 conference mark. When we are completely healthy, I think we have a deep team,” Larrañaga said. One of the new players Meier is most excited to have on the team is Utah transfer Lola Pendande. She is ready for a big role on this team, she’s a team player,” Meier said.

Alone but together under lockdown, New York Girl Scouts embark on bird count project

NEW YORK (Reuters) - When the COVID-19 crisis hit, a Girl Scout troop in central New York thought it might have to scrap its group bird-counting trip altogether. Millers 11-year-old daughter Jordan, a Girl Scout Cadette, said she was worried and frightened when she first heard about the pandemic. It gives you something to focus on instead of having your mind going to all these fears, Jordan Miller said. Millers Girl Scout troop is just one of many organizations and individuals who are counting birds as part of Global Big Day. We definitely recognize that this will be the most city the City Nature Challenge has ever been, she said.
