GOP infighting in post-Trump era threatens California recall

(AP Photo/Jae C. Hong)LOS ANGELES – California Republicans eager to recall Democratic Gov. The head of the state Republican Party, Jessica Millan Patterson, is being challenged at a GOP convention this weekend by longtime conservative activist Steve Frank, who says the state party is attempting to silence conservative voices. Ad“This is California’s version of the national battle for the soul and the future of the Republican Party,” said Thad Kousser, a political science professor at the University of California, San Diego. But “just when the Republican Party in California is showing signs of life, it’s deciding to cannibalize itself,” Kousser added. For long-suffering California Republicans, party infighting could divide their ranks and make it more challenging to oust Newsom.

Passage: Three American originals

It happened this past week: the passing of three American originals ... two phenomenally musical, one deeply controversial. Larry Flynt died Wednesday of heart failure at his Los Angeles home. Jerry Falwell won Flynt a reputation as something of a free-speech champion. A founding member of the Supremes along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, Wilson was part of a Motown Records powerhouse. And jazz-rock-fusion pianist Chick Corea died Tuesday at his Florida home.

Larry Flynt's latest gamble

Anyone who knows the name Larry Flynt is likely to remember the 1978 shooting that left him paralyzed. These are just some of the adjectives that come to mind when describing Larry Flynt and Hustler, the magazine he began publishing 40 years ago. "I treat Hustler the same way as I would if it was a jar of peanut butter or a can of green beans," Flynt replied. He is no longer the bombastic, defiant defendant portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the 1996 film, "The People vs. Larry Flynt." Of course not," Flynt replied.
