A U.S. Coast Guard diver lowered from the sky Wednesday braved frigid rapids to get to a car submerged in water near the brink of Niagara Falls, only to find it was too late to rescue the driver trapped inside. The diver was lowered from a hovering helicopter, climbed into the car and pulled out the body of its lone occupant, a woman in her 60s, officials from New York's State Park Police said. “It was an incredible job by the Coast Guard,” Park Police Capt. A slow-motion drama is unfolding at one of North America's most famous tourist sites, days after a powerful storm blew through the region on Halloween night. It's happening at Niagara Falls upriver on Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, where an old iron boat has been stuck on the rocks for more than a century. The so-called "iron scow" or "Niagara scow" has been rusting at that spot since 1918, but it has moved when a powerful storm dislodged it some 150 feet down river. Those who are following the news of the "iron scow" can even get a glimpse of it from Google Earth. That could be the message behind the most popular design in a new license plate contest. On Friday, the state announced the wide-ranging winner, which features not only the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline, but also Niagara Falls, a mountain range, and a Long Island lighthouse. All the finalists used blue and gold, an outline of the state, and the word "Excelsior," which is the Latin motto on the state seal that means "Ever upward."
Man swept over Niagara Falls survives
John Normile/Getty Images(CNN) - A man was injured Tuesday morning after being swept over one of the waterfalls that makes up Niagara Falls, police said. Police in Ontario, Canada, were responding to a call of a man in crisis at Horseshoe Falls when the man climbed over a retaining wall, Niagara Parks Police tweeted. The man was swept over the rim and fell 188 feet into the Lower Niagara River. According to the Niagara Parks website, the plunge pool is usually 100 feet deep. Horseshoe Falls is the largest of the three waterfalls that form Niagara Falls.
