The 23rd Annual Latin Grammy Awards was hosted on Thursday, Nov. 17 at the Mandalay Bay Casino and Resort’s Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas. LGBTQ+ History was made when singer-songwriter and actress Liniker won the Latin Grammy for “Best Música Popular Brasileira Album.” Liniker is the first transgender person to win a Latin Grammy. Bad Bunny’s summer hit “Tití Me Preguntó” received the Latin Grammy for Best Urban Fusion/Performance and Best Urban Song. On April 9, only a week after global sensation and reggaeton artist Bad Bunny took over the Magic City, another popular artist took advantage of the limelight at a sold-out FTX Arena. Several UM students were more than ready to see the Puerto Rican artist live and in-person. “I don’t really know what to expect,” said Aileen Flores, an Ecuadorian-American sophomore at UM who recently started listening to Alejandro’s music. Students like Lopez were also expecting some differences compared to Bad Bunny’s concert, who she saw live in Orlando before he dominated Miami. “I’ve been to other concerts where I didn’t really know all of the artist’s songs, like this one,” Flores said.

The Mexican singer won album of the year — a category dominated by male acts — on Thursday night with “Un Canto Por México, Vol. Lafourcade didn't attend the Latin Grammys, which aired live on Univision and featured a number of performances, most of them pre-taped due to the coronavirus pandemic. Grammy, Emmy and Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda kicked off the Latin Grammys with a strong message about Latin music.
