The streaming giant scooped up 20 small-screen nods — nearly three times as many as its closest competitor, HBO, and beating the 17 TV nominations it got last year. Streaming newcomer HBO Max scored two nominations with “The Flight Attendant,” a best comedy TV berth and also earned “The Big Bang Theory” veteran Kaley Cuoco her first Globe nod. Little-known Pop TV earned five nominations — all for the Canadian comedy “Schitt’s Creek,” which swept the comedy Emmy Awards last year. Ad“The Great” now faces “The Flight Attendant,” “Schitt’s Creek,” “Emily in Paris” and “Ted Lasso” for bragging rights to best comedy TV series.

After a year where the coronavirus pandemic nearly emptied movie theaters, Netflix dominated nominations to the 78th Golden Globe Awards on Wednesday, with David Fincher's "Mank" leading film nominees with six nods and "The Crown" topping all television series. "Mank," about "Citizen Kane" co-writer Herman Mankiewicz, landed nominations for best film, drama; best actor for Gary Oldman; best director for Fincher, best supporting actress for Amanda Seyfried; best score; and best screenplay for Jack Fincher, the director's father who penned the script before dying in 2003. "The Crown" also landed six nominations including best series, drama, and acting nods for Olivia Colman and Josh O'Connor. The final season of "Schitt's Creek" trailed with five nominations, while Netflix's "Ozark" (four nods) and "The Queen's Gambit" (two nods) also added to the streamer's totals. LONDON – Netflix has “no plans” to add a disclaimer to “The Crown” stating that its lavish drama about Britain's royal family is a work of fiction. In a statement Saturday, Netflix said it has always presented the drama, as just that — a drama. “We have always presented The Crown as a drama — and we have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events," it said. “The Crown” creator Peter Morgan, whose work also includes recent-history dramas “The Queen” and “Frost/Nixon,” has defended his work, saying it is thoroughly researched and true in spirit. Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother, was one who called on Netflix to add a disclaimer.

But this season proved the most gripping to date by introducing the future Princess Diana and portraying the early years of her tumultuous marriage to Prince Charles. For the former aide to both Charles and Diana, Netflix’s dramatic liberties with real-life events that many still remember are a right royal scandal. Advertisement“It’s disingenuous,” Arbiter declared, “and at the end of the day, it’s a lie with a capital L.”The pandemic has killed more people here than anywhere else in Europe. “A lot of them are young viewers who wouldn’t know [whether] what is portrayed is frankly untrue or a distorted truth. He added that the series should come with a warning label so that young viewers who did not live through the events do not mistake it for reality.

Audience demand for the show is 15.3 times greater than for other average television series in India in the last 30 days. The show washes over the discrimination of British rule, presenting the period in a glamorous soap-opera sort of way with a high entertainment value. Though some Indian viewers have pointed out facts about the devastation during colonial rule, they remain loyal viewers of the show. There are other historical events for The Crown to explore in its latest season spanning from the late 1970s to the early '90s. Season four ratchets up the drama as we see Queen Elizabeth begin to assert herself — and with fascinating results. The Crown shakes up the Queen’s world with the introduction of two new women: Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana. Like Thatcher, Diana is a larger-than-life figure that has the potential to overwhelm the world of The Crown. The final haunting image of season four ends its best season on record but also holds out promise that the show may have the same legacy and longevity of Queen Elizabeth herself.

Heading into the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony on Sunday night, it may seem like the biggest competition will be between HBO and Netflix. The two networks have the most nominations this year and have battled it out for the most wins over the last few years. In 2020, a disproportionate number of nominees do not require cable or satellite TV to be watched. Of the nearly 600 nominations for both the Creative Arts Emmys and the Primetime Emmys, 385 are held by 12 streaming or premium cable networks. On the other hand, 25 traditional cable networks account for the 208 remaining nominations.

NEW YORK The Crown has found its Princess Diana. Elizabeth Debicki will play the Princess of Wales in seasons five and six of The Crown, the Netflix series announced Sunday. Debicki will join a new cast for the series that includes Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth and Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret. Emma Corrin is playing Diana on the dramas upcoming fourth season, but Debicki will take on the part for what's sure to be the character's most dramatic chapters.
