Good Samaritan living out of car honored for saving woman’s life after she was struck by a drunk driver
DORAL, Fla. – On Friday, a Good Samaritan who went out of his way to save a woman who had been struck by a drunk driver in Miami was honored by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. According to officials, cameras captured the moment the Good Samaritan, Jorge Rodriguez, came to help Alva Alonso after she was hit by a drunk driver and pinned between two cars on Nov. 20 while getting a blanket out of the trunk of her car. Once Alonso was struck by the vehicle, Rodriguez rushed to her aid, and had the drunk driver who was responsible give him his shirt so he could make a tourniquet to stop the bleeding from her leg. Rodriguez lives out of his car and happened to be at the scene of the accident at the right moment in time. At the ceremony, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue honored Rodriguez for his heroic actions with a medal and department coin.
First responders who saved man from sinking car in Lauderhill canal recall frantic rescue
LAUDERHILL, Fla. – First responders from Lauderhill Fire Rescue describe the effort to rescue a man from a canal at an apartment complex during Tropical Storm Eta. “We needed all hands on deck with the tremendous conditions we were facing,” said Lieutenant Cliff Petty. A Good Samaritan had tied a rope to the trunk of the car and was able to secure it before rescuers arrived. “I start clearing out the glass, and I look, and I go, ‘I think I got this guy,’” Lombardi recalled. Battalion Chief Ryan Hicks, who also went into the water for the rescue, said he would like to thank the bystander who secured Valcy’s vehicle.
Coast Guard rescues young girl whose inflatable raft drifted out to sea
– The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a young girl Monday afternoon after the lollipop-shaped inflatable raft that she was on drifted out to sea off the coast of Toa Baja, Puerto Rico. According to Coast Guard officials, they were alerted about the incident shortly before 4 p.m. They said a Good Samaritan at the beach, Samuel Cruz Valcárcel, spoke to a boat crew on the phone and helped guide them to where the girl was. The girl, who officials said was between 4 and 6 years old, was found more than a half-mile offshore. She was also wearing a life jacket,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Jesse Wilde, Coast Guard Boat Station San Juan coxswain for the case.
Good Samaritan seriously injured in hit-and-run crash in Oakland Park
OAKLAND PARK, Fla. – Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives are searching for the driver who seriously injured a Good Samaritan last week who was helping out another whose car had become disabled in Oakland Park. The hit-and-run crash was reported around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday in the eastbound lanes of East Cypress Creek Road at North Dixie Highway. Deputies said the victim, Jonathan James Patterson, was helping the driver whose car broke down when he was struck by a vehicle similar to a 2013-2016 Lexus GS 350. Detectives believe the driver was trying to turn right, but turned too wide, striking Patterson who was standing under the hood of the disabled car. Abby Alhlou of Abby's Jewelry says that it is common to see fake jewelry in this line of work, but this year it's worse than it's ever been. One day last week she had eight people come into her store attempting to sell fake jewelry. In that time, she's never seen this many people coming to her with the same type of fake jewelry. The store manager says there are a few tips you can look for if something like this happens to you. Sometimes the coloring is off, especially on the rings," Noor Alhlou, the store manager, said.
Good Samaritan rescues child from drowning
PLANTATION, Fla. – A Good Samaritan rescued a boy from drowning at a Plantation hotel pool on Friday night, according to Plantation Fire Rescue. After the rescue, another Good Samaritan performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the three-year-old boy.
