11 injured in Plantation crash involving Broward County Transit bus

1 taken to hospital in critical condition

PLANTATION, Fla. ā€“ Eleven people were injured Thursday morning in a crash involving a Broward County Transit bus, authorities said.

The crash was reported about 9:30 a.m. at U.S. Highway 441 and Northwest Eighth Street in Plantation.

Authorities said the driver of a red car rear-ended the bus.

Plantation Fire Rescue officials said 11 people were taken to local hospitals, including one who was listed in critical condition at Broward Health Medical Center.

The other patients were taken to Plantation General Hospital and Westside Regional Medical Center.

The driver of the red car suffered a broken leg, but fire-rescue officials said most of the other injuries were minor.

Authorities said the impact caused the bus' fuel tank to rupture, leading to a spill. Authorities said 50 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled and firefighters sprayed foam to keep it from spreading.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, Davie Fire Rescue and Plantation Fire Rescue assisted each other at the scene. The Environmental Protection Agency was also called in to help clean up the spilled fuel.

All lanes of U.S. 441 were shut down between Sunrise Boulevard and Northwest Fifth Street as authorities worked to clear the scene. Southbound lanes have since reopened.

Detectives are investigating what caused the driver to rear-end the bus.
