Miami-Dade police cruiser crashes into vehicle, bushes in Miami

Officer, 8 others taken to hospitals

MIAMI – Nine people were injured Thursday night in a crash involving a Miami-Dade police officer and his K-9.

The crash was reported just before 6:30 p.m. in the area of West Flagler Street and 57th Avenue in Miami.

Photos from the scene show a Miami-Dade police cruiser that crashed into bushes near a gas station.

One other vehicle was involved in the crash and had significant damage to its driver's side.

According to police, the officer, who is a 23-year veteran of the police department, was driving south on 57th Avenue while en route to assist West Miami police with a perimeter.

Police said an Audi A4 was going east on Flagler and tried to make a left turn on 57th Avenue when the officer crashed into the vehicle.

Eight people were inside the Audi, including three adults and five children. Three children were taken to Nicklaus Children's Hospital, one of whom is a young boy who is in critical condition.

Two children and the three adults were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center. The driver of the car is in critical condition.

The police officer was taken to Doctors Hospital.

Local 10 News reporter Janine Stanwood said the officer was being treated as a precaution, but he is expected to be OK. His dog is also expected to be fine.

"Weather was definitely a factor," Detective Marjorie Eloi said.

It's unclear which driver was at fault. Eloi said the lights were out at the intersection because of the weather, and it's unclear whether the officer and other driver treated the intersection as a four-way stop.
