MIRAMAR, Fla. — Two people were killed in a crash involving a motorcycle and a tractor-trailer on U.S. 27 in Miramar early Saturday morning, authorities said.
Police identified the two victims as 43-year-old William Edgar Hernandez and 58-year-old Glenis Burgos.
According to the Miramar Police Department, officers responded to the crash at approximately 1:38 a.m. near Mile Marker 21 on southbound U.S. 27.
Investigators say traffic had slowed on the highway when the motorcycle was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of a tractor-trailer.
They said both Hernandez and Burgos pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities established a large investigation scene, shutting down the southbound lanes of U.S. 27 at Pines Boulevard for about eight hours while the Miramar Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit investigated. The roadway has since reopened.
Preliminary information indicates traffic had already been stopped because of a separate vehicle fire before the fatal collision.
Traffic was backed up for at least a half-mile north of the scene when the motorcycle and tractor-trailer became involved in the crash. Officials have not confirmed additional circumstances leading up to the collision.
Officers from the Miramar and Pembroke Pines police departments responded to the scene.
Police said the investigation remains “active and ongoing.”
