Knocked-over fire hydrant floods street in North Miami Beach

Vehicle strikes hydrant, crashes into yard of home, police say

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. ā€“ A knocked-over fire hydrant caused serious flooding Monday morning in a neighborhood in North Miami Beach.

Sky 10 was above the scene at Northeast 193rd Street and 19th Place at 8:30 a.m. as crews worked to fix the hydrant as tens of thousands of gallons of water poured into the street.

Miami-Dade police said a vehicle struck the hydrant before crashing into the side yard of a nearby home.

The homeowner, Harry Zimmerman, told Local 10 News that his fence and part of his neighbor's fence were taken out by the gold Nissan Maxima.

"We have been living here for over 30 years and this is the first time something like this has happened," Zimmerman said.

The 72-year-old driver was taken to Aventura Hospital to be treated for a possible medical condition. He is expected to be OK.

Workers said residents in the area still have water.

Authorities said the driver was less than a mile away from his home when he lost control of his vehicle.
