Woman, toddler injured after car lands in water off I-95

Crash closes all southbound lanes of I-95 in Deerfield Beach

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. – A woman and a 3-year-old girl were seriously injured Friday morning after their car landed in a canal off Interstate 95 in Deerfield Beach.

The crash happened shortly before 11 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-95 near the Southwest 10th Street exit.

"As many as 20 people were in the water trying to rescue the woman and the child," Broward Sheriff's Office Fire Rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said. "The man in the car, he was able to get out himself."

Cynthia Hutchinson, 42, was taken to Broward Health North. Aubrey Herndon was airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center in critical condition.

A view from Sky 10 showed Florida Highway Patrol troopers consoling a man who was wrapped in a towel. He was later identified as Christopher Herndon, 42.

The Hyundai Elantra could be seen protruding from the water, resting on its roof.

All southbound lanes of I-95 in the area were closed during the investigation.
