Sand covers A1A in Fort Lauderdale Beach after Irma

City officials expect that it will take full week to remove sand

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The beach is on State Road A1A -- literally.

Cleanup crews were on A1A early Monday morning to remove the tons of sand covering the beachfront roadway in Fort Lauderdale Beach.

Four front-end loaders were removing heaps of sand that covered the pavement on A1A near Las Olas Boulevard. Local 10 News reporter Jeff Weinsier said two more front-end loaders were on the way.

City officials said there is so much wet sand on A1A that it will take a full week to remove it all.

The sand was so plentiful that it covered the paved parking lot across from the historic Elbo Room.
