April 28: Heat builds, storms stay west; wildfire smoke a concern

We could see a stray shower on Tuesday, but the stronger storms will remain well west in the Everglades. This pattern is expected to continue Wednesday. No meaningful rain is likely until late Sunday into Monday, when a front moves through Florida. The bigger weather story is the heat. The hottest stretch of the year so far begins Thursday, with temperatures in the 90s lasting into the weekend. Highs around 92 degrees could challenge record levels.

A wildfire is burning along Highway 41 near Miccosukee. Winds will carry smoke into the Everglades today and Wednesday. If the fire is still burning by Thursday morning, it could become a bigger concern as shifting winds may push smoke into more populated areas of Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
