Monroe County applies Wilma lessons to Irma response

Commanders stow away vehicles, equipment on higher ground

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – In preparation for Hurricane Irma the Monroe County Sheriff's Office spent much of Thursday moving cars, trucks, boats, messaging boards and large equipment to safer locations.

A move they made after they lost several vehicles due to flooding when Hurricane Wilma struck in 2005.

The Sheriff's Office learned their lesson, and now equipment is placed on higher ground and places where equipment would be safer from the storm, storm surge and flooding.

The Pink Plaza in Key Largo and the Aviation Hanger at the Florida Keys Marathon International Airport are now serving as storage areas.

"It is essential for law enforcement assets to remain dry and undamaged so officers can respond to emergencies after the storm passes," Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

In the upper keys vehicles are parked in the parking lot of the Pink Plaza in Key Largo and some vehicles are also at Aviation Hanger at the Marathon airport in the lower keys for protection.
