Publix to close Miami-Dade, Broward stores at 9 p.m. Friday

Grocery chain promises to restock items until store closures

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – With Irma drawing closer, Publix has announced that the company's stores in Miami-Dade and Broward will close at 9 p.m. on Friday.

Publix locations north of Broward up through Vero Beach will close at noon on Saturday.

Publix stores will be restocking items throughout the day as customers prepare for Hurricane Irma, employees said.

Local 10 News reporter Erica Rakow was at the Hollywood store early Thursday, where the manager allowed customers inside at 6 a.m., an hour before the supermarket was supposed to open.

The store ran out of water within an hour, but employees said they would be restocking water and other goods throughout the day.

"It's been like my fifth trip to the store. I've been up since 1:30 this morning getting gas for two vehicles and watching the news," one customer, Karen Exterkamp, said. "I'm having a hard time getting water, so I'm happy I got that."

Customers were limited to four one-gallon jugs of water per person as the grocery store tries to be fair to everyone in need of goods before the storm.

Managers said trucks will be coming throughout the day to bring in more water, including additional trucks that are typically used to bring in frozen food and other items.
