Miami-Dade Public Schools closed Thursday and Friday ahead of Irma

MIAMI – Miami-Dade Public Schools will close Thursday and Friday ahead of Hurricane Irma.

Superintendent Alberto Carvalho made the announcement at a county briefing Tuesday afternoon led by Mayor Carlos Gimenez.

All school activities, including extracurricular activities such as sports and after-school programs, will also be shut down.

The announcement comes just hours after Monroe County closed its schools for the remainder of the week.

Broward County Schools is expected to announce its decision later Wednesday.
