July formation points

No storms on the horizon just yet

MIAMI – The historical data from the National Hurricane Center show that 110 tropical storms have formed in July from 1851 through 2012.

The graphic shows preferred areas for tropical storm formation in the month of July to be over the Gulf of Mexico, off the southeast U.S. coast, and a few over the western Caribbean.  This is similar to June, but in July, we also start looking to the east over the tropical Atlantic.

During the satellite era – which started in 1966 – we have seen an average of one named storm form somewhere in the Atlantic Basin during July.  And, on average, we have one hurricane about every other year during this month.

Computer models are currently not showing any potential tropical cyclone threats to South Florida.  That makes this a good time to make sure your hurricane plan is up-to-date, knowing that the peak of the hurricane season is yet to come.
